Post a paragraph or two about the topic you have chosen for your research project? (Come on. Aren't you curious about what other class members are writing about?)
Try to state your point of view/ thesis on the topic, what specific aspects of it you are going to discuss, and how you are going to handle the argument. What are your main argumentative points? What counterclaims do you need to refute?
I will be writing about the positive effects of the Rails to Trails and other railroad/garbage recycling programs, in urban areas especially, because our country has accumulated so much garbage that we don't know what to do with it now. I will argue that some of the programs encourage people to not only be more conscious of the environment, but to be healthier, more fit, they encourage creativeness and artistic skills and ingenuity. They also can encourage economic growth and a sense of community. I will need to refute arguments that propose that the steel could just be melted down and reused (which is just as expensive because there are not many steel mills still working). I will also need to address the ways in which this could negatively impact the environment because the rare spaces in the dense urban areas could be developed in different ways.
I will be writing about the Challenger Accident. I am still in the process of researching and figuring out what I believe the main cause of the accident was. However, I have narrowed it down to the failure of the O-rings and the political pressure to launch the Challenger. I wll also be including the effects of the accident and the different points of view on the main causes of the accident. This event was very controversial and I am still a little unsure about my position but hopefully researching more will help clarify my point of view.
I will be writing about Global Warming in the arctic. I am going to be proving that it does exist, what the causes of it are, and what global warming is. Also, specifically I am going to look at and discuss the effects in the arctic and how the ecosystems are being effected by global warming. As of right now my thesis is somewhere around the lines of global warming exists and is destroying the arctic and the wildlife living there.
I'm going to be writing about the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. Specifically, I want to address why the ship was allowed to launch with faulty radar, rumors that the captain was drunk at the time, and the cooperation or lack thereof of the corporation to clean up its mess. I also want to look into whether or not more clean up still needs to take place, and whether disturbing the left over oil pockets would do more harm than good.
I'm writing about Eugenics (selective breeding and in some definitions selective removal from gene pool). It's gotten a bad reputation since WWII because it's technically what Hitler was doing. But lately, scientists and others more informed on the matter than the general public are coming back to the issue with open minds. Recently, the Eugenics has become a personal issue, usually for those with a genetic disorder. Generally the questions have moved from what criteria to use in judging those to choose for selective breeding to individuals wondering if they want to take the chance of passing their disorder onto children rather than adopt. I think this is an important question to ask, along with something along the lines of, "Can I watch this child I'm going to love deal with the struggles I had to deal with?" or "Is this a point of commonality the child and I could share without affecting his/her life too much?" I'm still developing the rest of what was asked in the prompt.
I will also be writing about the challenger disaster, I will try to focus on the political reasons for the failure that caused the death of astronauts and a teacher. Like Molly, I am a little unsure where my direction of flow is going, I'm working on finding my thesis and central argument.
I'll be writing on Three Mile island, specifically on how it actually proves safety and nuclear energy works. I will argue for nuclear energy and explain how it is actually safer than many other alternatives.

ReplyDeleteI will be writing about the challenger accident and how pressure from politics and other sources caused an accident that wasn't completely necessary.
